Sled dogs rescued from Canada up for adoption in York County Six of 100 sled dogs that were rescued from deplorable conditions in a rural area of Canada earlier this month came to the York County SPCA to be adopted into loving homes. Three of the huskies are still available, said Melissa Smith, executive director of the SPCA. Two already have found homes, and one has been placed with a rescue group.
The York County SPCA received a call to help because the shelter recently partnered with the Humane Society of the United States' emergency services placement program. The humane society relies on shelters, such as the York County SPCA, to take in large numbers of animals confiscated from neglectful homes. "We're always looking to try to help animals in need," Smith said. "This particular situation looked like something that we would be able to help with -- without overwhelming ourselves and . . . displacing the animals that are already here."
In this particular case, the Humane Society International helped with the rescue of the 100 sled dogs. The owner turned the dogs over to a local SPCA and the Humane Society International/Canada. The dogs were chained outside without regular access to adequate food, clean water and shelter, according to the Humane Society International/Canada's Web site. Nearly a third of the females were pregnant.
