E.C. Segar's Popeye is featured on today's Google logo. Why is Popeye on the Google doodle? Because Google is honoring Popeye's creator, E.C. Segar's birthday. E.C. Segar is short for Elzie Crisler Segar. He was born on December 8, 1894. While growing up in his hometown of Chester, Illinois, E.C. Segar was actually a musician. He provided the music to go with the movies at the local theater.
Later, E.C. Segar became a projectionist at the theater and at the age of 18 he decided to become a cartoonist. He took a corresponding course to learn the craft. The Charlie Chaplin's Comedy Capers was his first cartoon was published on March 12,1916 in the Chicago Herald. On December 19, 1919, E.C. Segar's Timble Theatre strip was first published.
The Thimble Theatre strip featured Olive Oyl and her family. E.C. Segar added a character named Popeye to the Thimble strip in January 1929. Popeye stole the lead of the strip, the strip was later changed to Popeye, as well as the hearts of Olive Oyl and the readers. Popeye with his lovable saying, such as "I yam what I yam", has become one of the most famous cartoon characters.
