nobel peace prize

nobel peace prize
President Obama accepted his Nobel Peace Prize this morning in Oslo, Norway, becoming the third sitting U.S. president to accept the honor. The committee’s selection of a young wartime president has been controversial and Republicans are still quietly fuming over the thought of Mr. Obama joining the ranks of Mother Teresa, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Theodore Roosevelt.
Many wonder what Mr. Obama has done to deserve the award and even moments before he received the award he was forced to defend himself, reports The Times’ Jeff Zeleny. “The goal is not to win a popularity contest or to get an award — even one as esteemed as the Nobel Peace Prize,” Mr. Obama said, when asked by a reporter here whether he believed his honor was premature. “The goal is to advance American interests, make ourselves a continuing force for good in the world — something that we have been for decades now.”
Mr. Obama met with Prime Minister Stoltenberg and with King Harald V and Queen Sonja at the Royal Palace before the address. The next political challenge comes in Copenhagen where world leaders and climate change gurus are meeting at a global summit. He’ll be back in Washington first.
