hometown favorites

hometown favorites
We certainly have plenty of hometown favorites that former residents would like to have. Pease’s candy. Cozy Dogs. Chilli Man coney-dog sauce. Maldaner’s morel pie. Vose’s corndogs. Incredibly Delicious pastries. Old Lux chive-cheese sauce. Everyone in Springfield seems to have — and eagerly defend — a favorite horseshoe, pizza, chili, burger, barbecue sauce, salad dressing, salsa and lemon shakeup. We endlessly debate which restaurant has the best Italian, the best Mexican, the best bar food. Who makes the coolest cocktail, superior soup, top tenderloin sandwich?
Got a catalog in the mail last week that I was about to toss in the recycling bin until I noticed the cover showed a deep-dish pizza dripping with gooey cheese. Another glance, and I saw the back cover sporting a photo of a luscious peppermint cheesecake. It was a catalog from Tastes of Chicago a collection of popular food items from Chicagoland. If you order, the company will ship them anywhere in the U.S.
There are Lou Malnati’s pizzas, Eli’s cheesecakes, Vienna Chicago-style hot dogs and Italian beef, tubs of Garrett popcorn, Lezza cannoli, Manny’s corned beef and potato pancakes, Hackney’s burgers. Other delicacies: Long Grove Confectionery’s apple pies and chocolates, chocolate chip cookies from Carol’s Cookies, Carson’s ribs, Wildfire filet mignon and redskin mashed potatoes, Portillo’s Italian beef and hot dogs, rum fudge balls from Kay’s Candies, Harry Caray’s chicken Vesuvio.
